Image transfer on a table painted with Miss Mustard Seed Milk Paint

Picture
I decided to keep this project simple. I chose a drop leaf table that I had planned to paint only the top, and cut the agony of all those gate legs out of the process.

I love working with paints that require no sanding! The milk paint is one of those, in addition to the Annie Sloan Chalk Paint that I use most often.  After following the package directions on the Miss Mustard Seed paint, I slathered on my first coat.  This can be pretty runny as it really is nearly the consistency of milk. Let it dry between coats. I have found that I like my second coat a little heavier and seem to get more of the beautiful chippy finish if I layer it on heavier or even hit here and there with a 3rd coat.  It dries pretty quickly so this whole process is a quick one. As you can see I'm not very picky about neatness and typically end up with a lot on me or the floor.

Once your paint has dried completely you are ready to sand and will see some places starting to obviously flake.  Those are going to be the nice big chippy areas.  Others, as in the top right photo, are less obvious but with your light sanding you can get through some of the layers to reveal more wood or color from underneath.  This is my favorite part! The more paint that comes off the better!

Time to transfer!
I use the freezer paper method.  Use spray adhesive to attach freezer paper to a sheet of stock printer paper.  Tear off a sheet of freezer paper larger than the printer paper and after adhering the NON-shiny side of the freezer paper you can trim it down fit.  You want the shiny waxy side up because this is where you will print without it absorbing your ink.
Now the next step is one that I often forget but that is to REVERSE your image if it involves letters or number.  You want it to appear mirrored so that it's the correct direction when you transfer it.  Depending on the program you use, you can look up lots of info on how to reverse or mirror.  (On my computer there is a "flip horizontally" option under tools.)

Right before you hit "print" you will now very lightly dampen your painted surface with a damp sponge or cloth.  As soon as your image comes out of your printer simply put it in place and use a spoon or other object to "burnish" the back of your paper, taking care not to move it.
That's it!

You can also follow this same method to transfer onto fabric by simply adding the step of ironing the back of your paper with a dry - no steam- iron to help set the ink on your fabric before removing your paper.

You can wipe off your freezer paper with a wet towel and use it again.  I've used the same paper at least 5 times now. (although my method often involved a dab of spit and a sheet of nearby toilet paper.  I'm not ashamed! lol )

The final step is to wax your painted piece.  Miss Mustard Seed makes a great wax that works perfectly with her paints!

This is my finished drop leaf!  I did the same image on both sides, so when it's folded down you can enjoy the little French image no matter where it sets.
  Good Luck!
